Talking About Commas: Songs/Lyrics
Battle Mountain
(Talking About Commas)
Connelly
written from the point of view of a gas station attendent in the small, high-desert town of Battle Mountain, NV
Under the radar I live in a tired old shell
That used to be the house where I grew up
My AC’s broke, it’s hot as hell, the candy’s in
the cooler hiding from the gasoline pump
I see travelers pass through all day long
but no one offers me a ride
why do I keep hanging on
to this life in the desert high?
I see miles and miles of syndicated peaks
and time after time I curse the coming weeks
I try and try to see through this rock ceiling
I want to live this life they say God has given me
I’m from this great country’s armpit
says the noble Washington Post
do they know how hard this town has worked?
I wish they could ask the ghosts
They say we’re just the good ole boys
who keep this country on it’s wheels
why do you care what color my collar is?
Let me tell you how it feels
